How it would help

The economy in recent years has really started to fall in the United States. The government is more than 13 trillion dollars in debt and it grows around 4.5 billion dollars a day. With there being 310 million citizens in the country, that means that each citizen is around 45 thousand dollars in debt. This is the worst debt that the country has ever been in during its history. It is a large gamble, but I think that legalizing weed could help bring our country out of debt. According to surveys taken in the United States, it has been found that 42% of our population has tried or is a constant user of weed. That means that millions of people a day are going against the law and using illegal drugs so that they can feel high. Think of how many people would use weed if it were legal. The plan that I think should be followed by the government is to legalize weed. Once they have legalized it, they can tax it heavily and help to bring in more revenue to the government. Legalizing weed alone could help our government out tremendously. Companies would start producing it and it would become a huge industry in the country bringing in millions of dollars a day.  Not only would legalizing weed solve issues like debt, but it would also bring the crime rate down in America. Illegally transporting weed across the border is a huge problem that has to be dealt with in America. Nearly 5/6th of the weed that is used in America is thought to be illegally trafficked across the border. Countries such as Colombia, Mexico, and Jamaica help to supply a huge amount of this. The government could work with these countries to help make an even bigger profit off of legalizing weed. It seems as though the government should start looking at the positive weed could bring to the country instead of just the negatives. If weed was legalized, the country would reap benefits that it cannot even imagine

  1. There are some potential downsides of legalizing marijuana. It could seem like an endorsement for using drugs and getting high, but there could be some major benefits, too. I agree that the government could be able to tax marijuana and other drugs to help get Americans out of debt. I don’t feel like this should be the sole reason that the government legalizing drugs though. If America legalized marijuana, then the government could do more to regulate who it’s given to and how safe it is. Controlled prescription drugs are closely monitored by government agencies. With government interaction, they could control where the drugs are going. On top of being able to regulate drug destinations, the government could use their agencies to make sure that the marijuana for sale is safe. Many times, drug dealers will use a substance that can mimic the appearance of marijuana. For them, it’s a cheaper way to give people their “high” while collecting as much profit as possible. Some of these substitute substances can be extremely dangerous. By cracking down on the drug market, the government could help make drugs a little safer. That said, I still agree with Nancy Reagan and the “Just Say No” policy. There may be benefits for legalizing marijuana, but I don’t necessarily agree with legalizing marijuana.

  2. I'm not sure how much I believe that it will lower debt in America because I think part of the reason people want it so bad is because it's illegal. I think if it was legal not as many people would abuse it. That could be good for our country but it won't solve our debt problem. However, I think it would lower the crime rate at the border between Mexico and the U.S. I do believe, though, that it wouldn't reduce crime at the border significantly because weed is definitely not the only drug being smuggled into the U.S. Cocaine is actually a big issue as well. I think the effects of marijuana are not nearly as bad as things like cocaine but cocaine should not be legalized. What I'm saying is that I don't think legalizing weed will reduce crime rates at the border towns enough.

  3. Legalizing marijuana might not be able to completely solve our debt problem in the country but it is a start. The country could use money from anywhere it can find it and marijuana could be one of many sources. Of course, if marijuana was legalized, government agencies would overlook the producing of it to make sure it is safe for the public. The number of people that smoke the drug is unknown and for that reason we have no clear answer to how much money we can bring in from taxing the drug. All we know is that the governemt is in a huge debt right now and something needs to be done to solve it.
